Computing

At Cottage Grove Primary School, we believe that technology is an essential part of modern life and that all children should develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to use it safely, creatively and responsibly. Our computing curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and for life in an increasingly digital world. We ensure that computing is both taught discretely and used meaningfully across the wider curriculum.

Through our curriculum, children learn about computer science, digital literacy and information technology. They develop programming and coding skills, create digital media, analyse data, understand computer systems and networks, and explore how technology can be used purposefully to communicate and solve problems. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build upon prior knowledge and become increasingly independent and confident users of technology.

We follow the Teach Computing curriculum and enhance this through the use of a wide range of digital tools and technologies, including Google Classroom, Scratch, Canva, micro: bits, spreadsheets, databases and multimedia applications. From taking photographs and exploring technology in the Early Years to programming, data handling, web design and physical computing in Key Stage Two, pupils experience a broad and engaging curriculum that develops both technical skills and creativity.

Online safety is at the heart of our computing curriculum. Using the Project Evolve framework, pupils are taught how to keep themselves safe online, manage information responsibly, build positive online relationships and understand their digital footprint. These important themes are revisited throughout their time at school to help children become responsible digital citizens.

Our aim is that every child leaves Cottage Grove as a confident, resilient and responsible user of technology, equipped with the skills needed to succeed in secondary education and beyond. Through our school values of acceptance, achievement, independence, perseverance and respect, we encourage children to embrace technology positively and recognise its role in shaping the future.
