PSHE
At Cottage Grove Primary School, we believe that PSHE is one of the most important subjects we teach. Our curriculum is designed to help children become healthy, safe, confident and responsible individuals who are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of modern life. We recognise that many of our pupils face a range of social, emotional and economic challenges, and therefore place a strong emphasis on developing resilience, self-belief, positive relationships and a sense of belonging. PSHE is at the heart of our commitment to Success for All, ensuring that every child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and strategies they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from the Early Years through to Year 6, enabling children to build upon prior learning and revisit key concepts as they mature. Through topics such as families and friendships, mental and physical health, keeping safe, respectful relationships, belonging to a community, financial education and digital resilience, pupils develop a strong understanding of themselves and the world around them. Learning is adapted to reflect the needs, experiences and contexts of our children, making it both relevant and meaningful.
PSHE is taught through dedicated lessons as well as being woven throughout the wider curriculum and daily life of the school. Children are given regular opportunities to discuss important issues, explore different viewpoints and reflect on their own beliefs and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Through activities such as circle time, enterprise projects, pupil leadership opportunities and community-focused learning, children learn to become active, responsible citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities.
A key strength of our PSHE curriculum is its focus on inclusion, diversity and personal identity. We encourage children to celebrate differences, show empathy towards others and understand the importance of respect in all aspects of life. By exploring a range of experiences and perspectives, pupils develop the confidence to express themselves while valuing the views and contributions of others.
Our aim is that every child leaves Cottage Grove with the confidence, resilience and character needed to make positive choices, build healthy relationships and contribute positively to society. Through our values of acceptance, achievement, independence, perseverance and respect, we prepare our pupils not only for the next stage of their education but also for happy, healthy and successful lives.
