Music
At Cottage Grove Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful and inspiring form of expression that enriches children's lives, develops creativity and builds confidence. Our music curriculum is designed to foster a lifelong appreciation and love of music while providing every child with the opportunity to perform, compose, listen to and evaluate a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions. We aim to develop confident young musicians who are able to express themselves creatively and appreciate the important role music plays in the world around them.
We follow the Kapow Primary Music Scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. Through Kapow, pupils develop their understanding of musical elements such as pitch, tempo, dynamics, rhythm, structure and notation, whilst building skills in singing, composing, improvising and performing. Learning is structured so that children continually build upon prior knowledge and develop increasing confidence and musical competence as they move through the school.
Children experience a broad and diverse range of musical opportunities throughout their time at Cottage Grove. They explore music from different cultures, historical periods and traditions, develop their singing skills, learn about influential musicians and composers, and take part in performances and celebrations throughout the year. In addition, all pupils in Year 4 benefit from specialist weekly ukulele lessons, giving them the opportunity to learn and perform on a musical instrument.
Music is an important part of life at Cottage Grove. Weekly singing assemblies, concerts, productions, workshops and performances help children develop confidence, resilience and teamwork. We are also proud to offer additional instrumental tuition through partnerships with music providers, enabling children to further develop their musical talents and interests.
Music is an important part of life at Cottage Grove. Weekly singing assemblies, concerts, productions, workshops and performances help children develop confidence, resilience and teamwork. We further enrich our curriculum through a range of additional musical experiences, including collaborative performance opportunities with the Portsmouth Music Hub and opportunities to experience live professional music through performances from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO). These experiences broaden children's cultural capital, inspire future aspirations and help them develop a deeper appreciation of music beyond the classroom.
