PE

At Cottage Grove Primary School, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in supporting children's physical health, mental wellbeing and personal development. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all children to enjoy being active, develop a lifelong love of physical activity and achieve success through sport and movement. We aim to provide every pupil with the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership whilst promoting healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes towards physical activity.

Our curriculum is broad, balanced and carefully sequenced to ensure that children progressively develop and apply a wide range of physical skills. Through activities including gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, invasion games, striking and fielding, outdoor and adventurous activities, and alternative sports, pupils build competence, confidence and an understanding of how to lead healthy, active lives. Skills are revisited and applied across different sporting contexts, enabling children to deepen their knowledge and understanding as they progress through the school.

To ensure the highest quality provision, we work closely with PH Sports, whose specialist coaches deliver PE using their renowned Head, Heart and Hands approach. This philosophy develops not only physical competence and sporting skills (Hands), but also children's knowledge and understanding of healthy lifestyles (Head) and important personal qualities such as resilience, teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship (Heart). By combining specialist coaching with our curriculum, we ensure pupils receive engaging, inclusive and challenging PE experiences that support their development as well-rounded individuals.

Children participate in a wide range of competitive and enrichment opportunities throughout the year through our involvement in the Hampshire School Games programme and local sporting competitions. These experiences allow pupils to represent the school, develop their sporting talents and demonstrate our core values of acceptance, achievement, independence, perseverance and respect in real-life situations. Competitive sport is viewed positively, helping children learn how to celebrate success, respond to challenge and support one another.

Swimming forms an important part of our curriculum, with all Key Stage 2 pupils accessing swimming lessons delivered by qualified instructors at Ravelin Sports Centre. Alongside this, children benefit from both indoor and outdoor PE lessons each week, ensuring they experience a diverse range of activities that cater to different strengths, interests and abilities.

Our aim is that every child leaves Cottage Grove physically literate, confident and motivated to lead an active lifestyle. Through high-quality teaching, specialist coaching and a wealth of competitive and enrichment opportunities, pupils develop the skills, knowledge and character needed to succeed both in sport and in life.
