Maths

At Cottage Grove Primary School, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who can reason, problem solve and apply their mathematical understanding to the world around them. We place a strong emphasis on developing deep conceptual understanding alongside fluency, ensuring that children do not simply learn procedures but understand why mathematics works. This approach helps children become confident learners who are able to explain, justify and apply their thinking.

A Mastery Approach to Mathematics

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme as the foundation of our curriculum. This provides a carefully sequenced programme of learning which enables children to build knowledge progressively from the Early Years through to Year 6. Through a mastery approach, all children access the same ambitious curriculum, with teachers providing appropriate support and challenge to ensure every child can achieve success.

Our teaching is underpinned by the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. Children first explore mathematical concepts using practical resources and manipulatives before representing their understanding through diagrams and models, and finally applying their knowledge using abstract mathematical notation. This ensures that understanding is secure before moving on to more complex learning.

Developing Strong Number Sense

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we use the Mastering Number programme developed by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). This programme strengthens children's understanding of number, counting, composition and calculation, helping them develop the secure foundations needed for future success in mathematics.

As children move through Key Stage 2, we continue to prioritise number fluency through the Number Sense Multiplication and Division programme. This supports pupils in developing a deep understanding of multiplication and division relationships alongside efficient recall of key facts, ensuring they are able to apply their knowledge confidently when solving increasingly complex problems.

Mathematical Fluency

Rapid recall of number facts is an essential part of becoming a successful mathematician. Children regularly practise key number facts, including number bonds and multiplication tables, to improve fluency and confidence.

To support this, all pupils have access to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), an engaging online platform that helps children develop quick and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts. Regular practice both in school and at home helps pupils build the automaticity needed to tackle more challenging mathematical concepts successfully.

Representation and Reasoning

Across the school, children use a range of mathematical representations including part-whole models, bar models, number lines and manipulatives. These visual approaches help pupils make connections between concepts, explain their thinking and solve increasingly complex problems. As children progress through the school, they become more confident in selecting efficient methods and applying their understanding independently.

Mathematics in the Early Years

Mathematics begins in our Nursery and Reception classes through practical, engaging and meaningful experiences. Children develop confidence in counting, subitising, comparing quantities, recognising patterns and exploring number relationships. Through Mastering Number and carefully planned activities, children build a strong understanding of number that prepares them for Key Stage 1.

Our Aim

We aim for every child to leave Cottage Grove as a confident and capable mathematician who enjoys the challenge of mathematics and understands its importance in everyday life. Through high-quality teaching, carefully structured progression and a strong focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving, we ensure that all children develop the mathematical knowledge and skills needed for future success.
